Lake Ann - Ingalls Peak Loop

Lake Ann - Ingalls Peak Loop Professional Review and Guide

"A long, seldom-traveled loop hike around Ingalls Peak. A day hike to Lake Ann is a reasonable 9.2-mile round trip, and many make a day hike or overnight trip to Lake Ann. However, Lake Ann is just the first stop on a 19-mile loop hike through some of the least traveled landscape in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. This loop is not often done, but it deserves more attention.

This trail gives you a lot of bang for your buck, as far as having great scenery of different colored jagged mountain peaks in short distance. Couple of snow patches visible. Great views. Very rocky trail for horses, with couple of water sources. Lost trail on way up to ridge above Lake Ann, but made it to top. Could not locate trail on other side. Decided to turn back. Maybe has washed out or lost in landslide? Definitely hikable, but with horses, risky. Other review from 2005 says trail picks up after ridge. Good Luck!

I didn't complete this loop. I thought it would be good to post a partial review. We started at the trail head. There was a steady rain with low clouds & some fog. The trail is easy to follow. There are wooden signs at each junction. The problem was at the peak just before Lake Ann. With low clouds and now heavy snow flakes & strong winds, it was hard to see that the trail continues straight over the edge. It looks too steep but after 20' down, the trail is well defined in the shale. The trip ended at Lake Ann due to snow, sleet & a 50' line of sight. We spent the night at the horse camp just off of Lake Ann. The return, also in the rain, allowed good views. Even the fog & snow blured peaks made for good views. I hope to complete this trip soon. The trail wasn't very difficult with a 55lb pack. In late season (sept.) be ready for anything. The weather changes quickly.
