Ingalls Peak

Ingalls Peak Professional Review and Guide

"Ingalls Peak lies 2 miles west of Mount Stuart in a scenic, easily accessible area. Crowded in summer, the area is less populous in winter—the snow cover markedly diminishes the number of visitors.

The open slopes above and below Ingalls Lake and Ingalls Creek offer a seeming infinity of ski runs. A snowmobile lift to Longs Pass or the end of the road makes this tour feasible in winter. The approach crosses steep, open slopes. Difficulties: High avalanche potential; routefinding required; permit / fee area."

The snow is still blocking the North Fork Teanaway River road 9737 just before the road to De Roux Creek and Campground. It’s melting fast however. We walked then skinned the last bit of road to the trailhead at the end of the road then headed up toward Ingalls Peak on trail 1394. Several groups were heading up to Ingalls Peak and Fortune Peak/Hill – that is the nicknamed hill just west of Ingalls Peak that Fortune Creek heads away from. Note that the Green Trails Map 209 for Mount Stuart shows the area well. We decided to head up to Longs Pass, which is also shown on the map in this trail guide from Rainer Burgdorfer’s book. After a short distance from the trailhead, you branch off right heading uphill away from the creek/river. Soon you exit the trees and head into a bowl that leads up to the pass. This is a great ski (Dan) or snowboard (me) run. Both of us skinned up with no problems. A spring storm rained down hard on us during our lunch under a tree in the center of the bowl. It was cold, but the run was still fun. There were many skiers on this Sunday to my surprise. Many I’m sure were also skiing nearby Iron Peak, Bill, Bean, and Earl Peak. With the heavy snowpack this year, the skiers were getting in their last runs possibly of the spring.
