Chelan to Leavenworth

Chelan to Leavenworth Professional Review and Guide

"This 62-mile drive follows along the south shore of Lake Chelan to Lake Chelan State Park, takes Navarre Coulee around Bear Mountain, follows the Columbia River to Wenatchee, and turns west along the Wenatchee River to Leavenworth. Lake Chelan is 52 square miles in area; quite a feat for a lake that is 51 miles long.

The bottom of the glacier-carved lake is below sea level, and much of it is one-third of a mile deep. It is bordered on both sides by towering mountains. Like Hells Canyon, the peaks get higher farther uplake. You may see mountain goats and other wildlife. The lake is lowered in the winter to allow for spring runoff. Lake Chelan Dam was built in 1927, but even today during “low tide,” tree stumps can be seen in orderly rows. Special attractions: Entiat Wildlife Area, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, river rafting. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
