Falls Creek Falls

Falls Creek Falls Professional Review and Guide

"This pleasant 3.4-mile out-and-back day hike leads you through low-elevation forest to one of the most impressive waterfalls accessible by trail in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Thundering Falls Creek Falls, the endpoint of this short hike, plunges more than 200 feet, surrounded by lush fern- and moss-draped cliffs.

To hikers familiar with the southern Cascades, waterfalls and Columbia Gorge are synonymous. But the trails to those waterfalls, mostly on the Oregon side and a short drive from Portland off Interstate 84, can be less than peaceful on weekends, filled with throngs of tourists and locals alike out for a quick jaunt."

The trail guide is mildly misleading about the roads; 1 sign was knocked down, and "left" really meant "right". So be open to that and just pay attention - you'll get there. And the drive and back roads are well worth it, but maybe not in a low-rider (lots of four-wheel worthy potholes). Trail parallels Fall Creek, and at top of the trail great views! Not an unknown trail for sure, for bikes and hikers alike. Highly recommended.

A very beautiful river hike culminating at the spectacular Big Creek Falls. Falls were VERY busy, but the trail wasn't crowded (nor was the "upper" trailhead, which is actually downstream of the "lower trailhead").

Absolutely beautiful. It is a short hike, only about 1.8 miles in, and the 650 foot gain in elevation may make it difficult for smaller children, but it is awesome. There is a nice river that runs along the trail most of the way and the forrest offers nice cover on a warm day. And the falls, I read that they look like something out of The Lord of the Rings and it really is true. They are great. I highly recommend this hike to anyone in the Portland area.

About two weeks ago I hiked this trail. I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The condition of the trail was excellent. I would rate it as moderately difficult despite the fact the length out and back is only 3.5 miles. There is one section where about half (guessing) of the elevation gain to the falls exists. The falls is gorgeous. I have lived in Hood River for 30 years and this is the first time I have investigated the area around Carson, Wa. For solitude go early. I started hiking around 9a.m. and met only 7 people on the journey to the falls. However, on the trip back to the trailhead I crossed paths with 30 or more people. I would definitely hike this trail again.
