Cedar Flats Nature Trail Loop

Cedar Flats Nature Trail Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Descending a few feet from the east side of the parking area, the Cedar Flats Nature Trail enters old-growth forest. In the spring, when the new leaves are just out on the understory of vine maple, the subdued green light that filters down through the canopy makes these deep woods especially beautiful. Just past the bridge, the trail forks. Bear right at the fork and continue along the well-maintained trail.

You will pass some large cedar trees and in a few yards there will be two very large Douglas-firs to the left of the trail. This seems to be a favorite picture taking spot, as there is a path to the base of the largest tree. A lahar flowed down the Muddy River during the 1980 eruption. The evidence of the deluge is still present in the form of logs and stumps scattered along the river bottom. Take your time and enjoy the old-growth forest."
