Green Lake Trail

Green Lake Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Think Mount Rainier, and the images that instantly come to mind usually include open meadows, wildflowers, glaciers, and grand views. Green Lake, though, proves there’s more to the park than that.

This wonderful trail stays with the cool shadows of deep old-growth forests. You’ll explore the quiet waters of a cool mountain stream and the deep, dark pool of a forested lake. No sweeping vistas. No alpine meadows. No glaciated peaks. Just rich forest ecosystems and trout-rich waters."

The lake itself is gorgeous and the foliage is nice, but the hike isn''t that great. Since the hike lacks views of Rainier, the ambitious might want to try to squeeze in both the Green Lake and Spray Park hikes.

This was an great hike! I parked in the Longmire parking lot and walked across the suspension bridge and found the trail head on the left a few hundred feet beyond. The weather was beautiful and the trail was close to perfect. The first 3.1 miles of the trail was a moderate steady climb. However, I did encounter a few swarms of mosquitoes toward the last half mile. The last half mile was quite steep and strenous. The tree line for the most part opened up to grasses and wild flowers. The reward at the top was awesome! At the saddle or summit I got a birds eye view of the surrounding wilderness. I was treated to views of Mt. St. Helens at 210 degrees my location and Mt. Adams at 160 degrees my location. The biggest treat was the unbelievable view of Mt. Rainier. I was up and back down within 5 hours, with a about a half hour at the top. Starting early allowed me enjoy the trail in the quite and without company.
