Lake Constance

Lake Constance Professional Review and Guide

"This secluded tarn is tucked in a cleft high on Mount Constance, a mind-blowing setting. Turquoise waters reflect sheer cliffs that spiral to the heavens. But getting here is arduous. The climbers’ path requires stamina, sure footing, and use of hands.

The elevation gain is insane: 3400 feet in 2.2 miles. And to make things even more difficult and long, a fire laid waste to half the trail and the access road is washed out. Only the most dogged and skilled hikers should attempt this trip.

Dogs prohibited. Requires scrambling and route-finding skills. Fire in 2009 wreaked serious damage, creating many obstacles and hazards."

Like mentioned, it is about a four mile hike along the old forest service road just to get to trail head, but the walk into the trail is nice and the hike itself is wonderful. The setting around the lake is beautiful and there are some wonderful views of The Brothers on your way up. Trail markings can get sketchy at some points, but since it follows the stream the whole way up, it's easy enough to locate. All in all, a great day hike.

I did not hike this trail but I tried. The road that was supposed to get us NEAR the trail was wiped out. So we really had to hike in just to start our hike. It was like a mountain disappeared where the road was except only Dosewallips River in its place. It must of wiped out years ago and looks like they are not fixing it anytime soon. The problem is it was a fair hike already to get there at the bottom of Lake Constance trail. Once we got there, you look up, like way up, and smoke is blazing out of there. They conveniently had a fire blazing around and then the trail of course was caution-taped off with a big CLOSED! Talk about a double whammy. It's funny because this is the third place I went that has had a fire except for the fact that this one was live. That makes it kind of dangerous especially if you have to run for your life while fiery flames chase you around. Anyway enough speculation. I talked to two hikers near the tail who claimed they hiked all the time and have spent a lot of time near this region. They said of their hike/climb on Constance Lake Trail that it was the worst hike they have ever done and would never recommend it and would never attempt to do it again in their lives, that is ever. They said it was very risky, the trail always disappears, there is little to brace yourself on, slippery boulders, that you actually in some spots have to grab your bag and throw it up to another ledge and then climb up and do that over again, and that on the way down it is ridiculous that you have to slide on your hands and feet over boulders without anything good to grab on. Anyway this hiker strongly advised us not to do the Lake Constance Trail.

We downloaded the eTrail and it was great. So was the hike. Like the eTrail said, it is steep, but not that technical. You are close to the creek the whole way to the lake - waterfalls and all. The lake setting is stunning and the water is greenish blue (great photos). We hiked all the way up avalanche canyon mostly on snow to the base of Inner Constance. We needed axes to ascend a nearby peak, but did not have them. Overall it was an increadible hike.
