Lake Constance

Lake Constance Professional Review and Guide

"This is a 4.4-mile round-trip wilderness route to Lake Constance for backpackers along the Dosewallips River trail corridor.

This “trail" is little more than a climbing route and is typified by brutal uphill pitches choked with roots and exposed boulders. Surfaces are often slippery when wet, and the route should not be attempted during rainy weather. At present, the Dosewallips River Road is washed out at Gamm Creek, requiring an additional hike of 4 miles each way to reach the original Constance Lake trailhead. As a result, this hike will be a challenging trek of 12.4 miles round-trip unless and until the road is repaired.

There are campsites on the north shore of the lake that require reservations, but only a mountaineer would be crazy enough to haul a full pack up this grade. Camping is restricted to a limited number of permits, which are issued at the Dosewallips Ranger Station."

The trail is closed right now due to a fire that according to reports must have been right on the trail. I went and snuck onto the Lake Constance Trail for a few minutes to check it out and wow it looks incredible. I would describe it as fantastic, challenging, interesting and fun. Of course I do not know what is higher where allegedly it becomes ridiculous. All I know is there was a fire there and that likely means not so good scenery. Since this trail supposedly requires you to use rocks and roots to climb up, if those burned, then that could make it risky by allowing for unstable ground and falling debris (as was posted on a sign when I went there). I had to give it a rating to write this. I gave it a 1 star because no one can do it! It is closed right now. Again note that I did not go on the trail but that I have to put a rating to leave some notes.

Here is a great day hike for experienced hikers. The great thing is that the steep and rugged trail weeds out the masses and the even greater thing is that there is much more to explore beyond the lake. Avalanche Canyon extends beyond the lake way up to the base of Mt. Constance and Inner Constance. We hiked up to a saddle below Inner Constance that had nice views of The Brothers. Bring an ice axe if you plan to explore way up here. The lake is a greenish-blue with nice picnic or camp spots around it. Because it’s in the park you will need a permit to camp. The eTrail contains all you need to get to and experience this great hike. Note that the road to the lake was washed out recently so there is an additional “approach” to reach the trailhead.
