This beautiful 2-mile trail through low-elevation old-growth cedars and firs leads upward to a serene woodland lake. The trail, recommended for older children, has a view of boats in Wildcat Cove. Downed nurse logs supporting young hemlocks are common, but children will laugh at the sight of a nurse rock at about 1 mile, with tree roots wrapping the oblong rock like cord around a package. Fragrance Lake is crescent-shaped, has trout and skipping water bugs, and can be circled on a level shoreline trail. Ask your children how they think this lake got its name.

A lovely hike! I have taken this trail several times and always enjoyed it quite a bit. The lake is gorgeous and there is good scenery along the way.

This is a nice easy day hike with a great viewing of the San Juans a couple of hundred meters off the main trail. There is a well maintained trail that is easily accessed that follows around the lake and offer many pleasant views. All of the people we met were from Bellingham-and very friendly. I would go back.
