Chuckanut Bay

Chuckanut Bay Professional Review and Guide

"The rocks around Chuckanut Bay make this Bellingham-area trip an interesting exploration. Convoluted hollows and the delicate saltwater-eroded Chuckanut sandstone formations, fossilized remnants of ancient palm trunks, and even a long-gone artist’s sculpture on a seaside rock reward the curious paddler."

Most folks come here from Lopez day paddles or longer trips, since James is the main camp site to west of Rosario Strait. THIS TRIP: came from south Lopez Island - near Richardson. 2 day/1 night. Great paddle via southern tip of Lopez...Several small islands around Mackaye Harbour. Moving east, lots of other islands to explore, steep cliffs, bays to cruise through and sealife (harbor seals, sea otters, dolphins, great blue herons and other birdlife). Long paddle north from Watmough Head along Lopez east coast. Check out Paul Allen's house(s) on west side of Sperry Penninsula. JAMES ISLAND: State Park Camp Site. Kayak-friendly camp sites on east/west sides. Great sunset views from west side. Nice grass sites on east side. Several cool trails on island to explore. You do get the day/boat campers, but most opt to stay aboard their motor boats. NOTE: Camping fees $6 per night (4 people), $2 next person. $5 on-site fine for not paying! So, make sure you pay up!
