Faraway Rock Trail

Faraway Rock Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This hike offers a magnificent view of the Tatoosh Range in one direction and Mount Rainier in the other. However, while children will be impressed standing on top of Faraway Rock, they will be even more impressed with the chances for wading in late summer ponds.

Hang onto their hands; don’t let them beat you there. A near vertical 200-foot cliff drops off on one side. The hike can be extended for a 2.5 mile loop. The hike to Faraway Rock is on a portion of the eastern leg of the Lakes Trail, a 5.5 mile loop from Paradise Inn to Reflection Lakes and back."

Awesome in every respect. The tarns above Paradise are wonderful and the experience of standing on Faraway Rock is exhilarating. We are going back this fall to hike it again because it's so stunning. Bear alert: We saw a black bear mother with three cubs on this trail from about 100 yards. They were content with berries and paid little mind to us. On the trail back to Paradise, we had a VERY CLOSE encounter with a grizzly bear, very rare for this area. (We identified it by the shoulder hump, face, and ENORMOUS blonde claws.) None of these experiences were life threatening, but if you have a fear of bears, wear bells and make your presence known.
