Copper Creek Hut

Copper Creek Hut Professional Review and Guide

"The Copper Creek Hut lacks the expansive views of some of the other
huts in the Mount Tahoma Trails Association system, but it is an ideal
destination for families and novice snowshoers looking for a comfortable
winter camping experience."

After hiking the Busywild Creek Overlook trail, we snowshoed up the Copper Creek Hut trail for about 2 miles. We turned around at the Valley Vista trail fork (it was getting to be about 3:30 PM). The weather was unseasonably warm and some of the trail near the Upper Sno-Park had only patches of snow. After the incline (1/2 mile) out of the Upper Sno-Park, the snow covered the ground and made for a fun, easy hike. There was not enough snow to make X-Country skiing worthwhile but snowshoes were great.
We found the trail without problem and it was nicely groomed up to the junction with two other trail heads. We decided to take the overlook trail around instead of continuing on the Copper Creek Hut Trail. It was a nice wide trail, but not groomed (a bit of added challenge after a foot of new snow.) It ends at a beautiful overlook of Mount Rainier. The overlook trail is about five miles from the lower lot round trip.
This is a great beginner level trail. The ascent is gradual and not too demanding. We left the parking lot (lower lot) at about 1030 and after a brief stay at the Copper Creek hut we returned to the parking lot by 1500 (we went very slow). Most of the groomed trails are on roads so the route is easy to follow. There are some views along the way, mostly to the North. At the hut there is an expansive view of the Valley and the surrounding hills. I'm sure Mount Rainier would have been beautiful if it had not been for the cloud cover. We did the trail on cross country ski's. There was snow all the way down to the lower parking lot.
