Mount Finlayson Trail

Mount Finlayson Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Who said “War is hell”? Hell, if the Pig War never broke out we wouldn’t have been left with the longest stretch of public beach in the San Juan Islands and some great hiking trails to boot. Once the site of an American military encampment, San Juan Island National Historical Park’s American Camp offers plenty of natural splendors and historical relics.

From Mount Finlayson, marvel at an undeveloped coastline spread out below you. Stare across the Strait of Juan de Fuca at a backdrop of snowy Olympic Mountain summits. Watch for eagles, plovers, sandpipers, and hawks. Enjoy one of the most spectacular settings in all of the San Juans."

"The open meadows of Mount Finlayson present excellent opportunities for wildflower viewing, and the views are outstanding. The mature Douglas fir forest of the ridgetop and northern flanks of the mountain are dark, cool, and quiet. Hikers can also seek solace at Jakle’s and Third Lagoons. Two trailheads start from the Jakle’s Lagoon parking lot and each goes to the same places, only in reverse. To begin, find the trailhead that leads up the hill on a narrow path rather than the trail that begins by the reader board and bicycle rack beyond the metal stock gate. This road will be your route back at the end of the day." Read more

"Unlike British Columbia's Mount Finlayson, this one is gentle and inviting. Stroll across golden lawns lined with windblown firs and marvel at the undeveloped and dramatic coastline spread out below you. Stare out across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Peninsula. Then, on your return, explore a couple of quiet lagoons on Griffin Bay rife with birdlife. This is one of the finest hiking areas within the entire San Juans chain." Read more
