West Mountain Road

West Mountain Road Professional Review and Guide

"Driving along narrow canyons and ridges that rise to an elevation of more than 6,000 feet will reward you with some of Washington’s most inspiring vistas, which stretch from the Blue Mountains across incised Snake River benchlands to Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains. Easy, although high ground clearance is necessary. Expect narrow sections with long drop-offs and little room to pass.

It doesn’t take long to encounter the appeal of this drive: broad vistas across benchlands scored by the streams that flow into the Grande Ronde and Snake rivers. You’ll enter the national forest about 7.5 miles from town, then pass the turnoff for Big Butte Lookout. But the views begin before that as West Mountain Road (4304) ascends more than 2,000 feet, onto a ridge between drainages to the north and south. About 14.5 miles from Anatone is the Wenatchee Guard Station, just one of many spots with first-class views. Continuing west, the road becomes No. 43, and brings you to the campground at Wickiup Spring."
