Heart Lake / Whistle Lake

Heart Lake / Whistle Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Rooty, rocky, hard-packed trails and roads invite mountain bikers to wander among old growth and alder, ferns, mosses, and wildflowers. You'll find some level stuff here, but not too much, and that's part of the fun. Middle-ring climbs, low-ring climbs, and even some hike-a-bikes are rewarded with sometimes speedy, sometimes jarring descents. Search around for views at the crests of the climbs; you'll love what you see.

There are a few descents riding down to Heart Lake Road excessively rutted, to the point where I was walking my bike downhill, but the vast majority of the trails were quite rideable, quite beautiful, and quite fun. Your conduct on the trails will determine the future of mountain biking in this beautiful, challenging area. Scenery: Beautiful lake overlooks, deep woods, San Juan Islands views form the high points on the trails, distant views west, south, and east form the top of Mt. Erie (road only)."

Wonderful trail system. Some steep, some level and very 'rooty'. Mostly single track trails. Bring maps or GPS to find your way. Roots can be troublesome on rainy days. Trails interconnect with Mt. Erie and Whistle Lake trails - very extensive and beautiful.

Missed on out guess of the weather; things were cool and cloudy and the area did not dry out. I do not recommend riding these trails unless things dry out. The initial trail from Heart lake was super slick roots, and the climbs were too muddy to enjoy going up or down.

Really love this place and network of trails. You definetly need to pick up a map of the area, which can be picked up from some shops in Anacortes or the Grocery store by Heart Lake (sorry don't have the names). The map cost $10 but is worth it, the trails have numbers which coorespond to the map. The trails are fast when you go downhill, the northend of the lake is really nice the southend is slow moving and challenging more for advanced riders. The map will also show which trails bikes are not allowed, watch for hikers around the lake. Rode this trail several times this past winter and we rarely saw other groups.

Fun trails, this is part of the Anacortes community trails. There are a lot of chocies in terms of how many miles you want to do and where to go. The lakes are beautiful and scenic, and the view rom Mt. Erie is great if you don't mind the steep climb up the paved road.
