A broad, grassy basaltic butte in the middle of nowhere—this landmark has much to crow over. Situated on a 1500-acre island in the Columbia River, in the shadow of the Horse Heaven Hills, birdlife here is prolific both in numbers and species. The views are good too, from the river below to the golden hills, plains, and fields embracing it. Watch for rattlesnakes.
