Mount Hor-Herbert Hawkes Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This is a satisfying half-day family hike to lake and mountain views.
Hikers put off by crowds at the Pisgah trailhead can find better prospects for unharried walking less than 2.0 miles up the road. A longer trek to outlooks that lack the pizazz of Mount Pisgah’s perches, the Herbert Hawkes Trail to the summit of Mount Hor still caps a pleasant day. For best results, consider this hike on a balmy afternoon when the sun at your back brightens Lake Willoughby’s northern reaches and reflects off the rocky cliffs that plunge to its eastern shore.
Thanks to the access road, the Herbert Hawkes Trail steps off from a trailhead already some 700 feet higher than the lake as it pops up stone steps about 20 yards west of the parking lot. Almost immediately the route turns right, easing upward through regenerated forest on an old woods road until it dwindles to a narrow path beneath a steep, eroded slope. After patiently waiting for the angle of the hill to change, the trail turns left on a moderate grade, finally gaining substantial elevation as it ascends through a forest of mature northern hardwoods."
