A look at gravity-defying Cantilever Rock and then an ascent to the summit of the tallest mountain in Vermont via a dramatic alpine ridge. Just the fact that Mount Mansfield is the tallest peak in Vermont makes it a magnet for hikers. About 40,000 people make it to the top of this landmark each year, though they are spread out among a number of different routes along every side of the mountain. A toll road from the Stowe Mountain Resort doubles as a ski trail during the winter. It allows people to drive within a mile of the summit, giving all but the weakest hikers a chance to reach the top.
