Highpoint rank by height: 26th. The hike from the top of the Auto Toll Road follows a short stretch of The Long Trail— a 440 mile (704 km) trail across Vermont following the main ridge of the Green Mountains. It is also possible to hike from the top of the Gondola. While this route is much shorter than the recommended hike, it follows the well-named Cliff Trail, and involves Class 2 and Class 3 rock scrambling. This alternative is not advised.

Just a quick point of order: the long trail is approximately 273 miles long, it is also approximately 440km long. Someone mistook the 440km to be the mileage...

The best views we have had on Long Trail hikes. Started off of road, hiked to Sterling Pond, then on the Long Trail all the way to the Lamoille River. Nicest shelters we have ever seen. We wished we has stayed at the shelter on the ridgeline rather than hiking stright downhill to Beaver Meadow Cabin (our topo map was not very clear). It was very wet and the short hike down to the cabin took us almost 2 1/2 hours because slippery and very steep. Worse was the realization we would have to go back up the next morning! Cabin was clean if dark (did not bring lantern). Spectacular views on the trail and not too crowded. Not pleased with the extension of the trail at the end (N by the river) by almost 2 1/2 miles to avoid crossing new owner's property if I remember correctly. This just about did in my kids/dogs who were exhausted. We want to redo this hike staying on the ridgeline in fall when the leaves are falling. It was wonderful but a long and strenuous hike--not for young kids. Great as an overnight!
