Osmore Pond and Big Deer Mountain

Plainfield, Vermont

Osmore Pond and Big Deer Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"This nice, fairly flat loop hike takes you to the summit of Big Deer Mountain, which has fine views of Lake Groton and other mountains to the north, east, and south, and then along Osmore Pond, a beautiful small lake with shelters near the edge.

At 25,000 acres, the Groton State Forest is the second-largest block of land owned by the state. There are endless trails and many lakes here, so if you visit to hike this loop, you may find other options in the area to keep you busy. The size of this area makes it feel very remote, providing a wilder experience than the 4.3-mile hike may suggest. That being said, this relatively flat loop provides mountain and lakeside views in a hike that is appropriate for anyone.

After you enter New Discovery Campground, the ranger at the gate (during the open season) will let you know where to park and can give you local maps."
