Burnt Rock Mountain Trail

Burnt Rock Mountain Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Burnt Rock Mountain is an impressive rocky dome, located along the Long Trail just north of Huntington Gap. Its summit was cleared of trees in a forest fire about a century ago. Today, a few scrub spruce and fir dot the multiple ledges and humps of rock, having little impact on the 360- degree view but creating a number of private perches on the rare day other hikers are on the summit with you.

Burnt Rock Mountain is not at the top of many hikers’ lists outside the Mad River Valley. It should be, especially with a dog! When approached via the Hedgehog Brook Trail (blue blazes), it is a reasonable half-day outing and a shorter alternative to neighboring 4000-footers with equally spectacular views in all directions."

This is a really fun trail and the views at the summit are totally worth the hike. It can get very steep in places but what a nice way to spend my day with my dog. She loved it as well! The first half of the trail is easy--it is pretty flat and winds around some little streams. We crossed several streams and brooks; some were bigger than others. It is currently fairly muddy and there are slippery sections, so be sure to wear shoes that are waterproof and have a good grip. I guess some people might find all the water-crossings a deterrent but I really enjoyed it. The second half of the trail is where it gets more challenging. I had to do a lot more rock scrambling than I expected and the whole hike up was kind of moderately strenuous, but it was honestly a great workout! The top is really fun, including some steep areas and a few ladders. My agile dog was able to keep up but, because of some slick rock and tricky areas, it might not be manageable for some pups. Once you reach the summit you are definitely rewarded. Super fantastic views!!! It took us a little under 2 hours to get to the top. Then we just spent a lot of time relaxing and enjoying the gorgeous scenery.
