Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"From the parking area on VT 11/30, cross the road, ascend the highway bank, and enter the woods (also a boulder field). Hike nearly half a mile, and cross a stream and then the old abandoned overgrown VT 30. Hike another 0.25 mile, cross another stream, and begin to ascend steeply. Almost 1 mile after beginning your hike, you will pass two vistas (one to the south and one to the northwest), reach a ridgetop, and descend a narrow ridge through a hardwood forest.

Hike another 0.9 mile, cross an old woods road and a small brook, and ascend west and then south. At mile 2.4, reach the junction with a side trail that leads a short distance to Spruce Peak (elevation 2,040'). At this side trail, head left along the A.T. another 0.4 mile to the side trail to Spruce Peak Shelter. Water is available from a spring just south of the shelter, which is 0.1 mile off the Trail."

"This is a convenient three-hour excursion to an overlook at the edge of the Lye Brook Wilderness. Brand names such as Orvis and Timberland attract even hard-core hikers to the upscale shops and factory outlets that populate Manchester Depot. But when active visitors have had enough, a quick ramble to Prospect Rock affords a welcome antidote to a day of rigorous browsing—or a very convenient diversion while companions shop till they drop. This walk along an old town road also serves as a perfect hike in early spring to tune up unused muscles without eroding a muddy trail."

"This short trail climbs at a steady pace to a rocky outcrop with nice views over Manchester and of Mt. Equinox just to the west."

This brief hike is a great sampling of the Appalachian Trail and an excellent hike for beginners. The trail is wide and mosquito filled, so bring the bug spray. It offers an excellent view of Manchester Valley on a clear day. Hit this trail if you want a quick run into the woods.
