Mount Equinox Trail

Mount Equinox Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Manchester, Vermont, is wedged into a narrow valley formed by the Green Mountains to the east and the Taconic Mountains to the west. Mount Equinox, which towers over the village, is the highest peak in the Taconic Range.

It is the dominant peak on the west side of Manchester and the highest peak in Vermont that is not part of the Green Mountains. The hike up Mount Equinox is worthwhile for its excellent views, both from Lookout Rock which lies northeast of the true summit along the summit ridge, and from the summit itself. The hike described here is a “lollipop hike,” with a loop at the top encompassing the summit and Lookout Rock."

We did this day hike as a means of getting in shape for 4 nights packing in Glacier NP in August. Although without packs on this hike, it was a good work-out. It has a 2800' change in elevation, with a combination of well graded paths and steep, rocky, and during our trip, wet paths at higher elevations. It is quite a beautiful hike, with vegetation much like a cloudforest when we got up higher-Olympic Peninsula light. Good views both sides from top but clouds moved in and subsequent rain. Trail guide was a bit confusing as to the loop at the top, we just doubled back after visiting the abandoned hotel. Highly recommended as a climb that combines a work-out and some beauty. The guide underestimates some of the footwork you need to do at the higher elevations so be prepared. Right near Manchester for supplies. The less vertically inclined can enjoy many sub-trails at the trail head, including a walk around a lake.
