After a bit of difficulty finding the trailhead, i proceeded up the 3000 foot mountain on a warm (about 45-50 degrees) fall day. Overall, a good hike, but not thrilling. Vertical gained was its best feature at 3000, with lack of ambience and removal from civilization its worst feature. More good things: -great view overlooking manchester from lookout point -during the fall you can get decent views the whole way up. it would be been unsatisfying with leaves on the trees. -it's close to bennington, where i was staying -it's close to outlet stores, which at first depressed me, but then i got some good deals at the gap outlet after finishing a bit early -it's not too long a hike, taking maybe 4 hours round trip if you hike at a decent pace, including a bit of walking around at the top. This can be a good or bad thing depending on what you're looking for. More bad things: -very near to touristy manchester, VT, which kinda kills my outdoorsy mood -there's a hotel at the top of the mountain with an auto road, so that kills the ambience even more, even though in the late fall it's kinda cool and eerie to have a deserted structure like that at the top of the mountain. -not that exciting a hike. minimal "alpine" type environment and vegetation (only for final 15 mins of hike) Not a bad hike if you need a hike and if you're in the area. Wouldn't make it a destination from Boston or another far away place, however. Peace, Alan

This was an "ok" hike, not much to see on the way up. At least half of the way is an old logging road, once trail diverts from road it's a fairly nice hike. Views from summit are pretty and the abandoned restaurant has a nice deck to have your lunch and relax. It was definitely a strenuous hike, straight to top. Good for a cardio workout, but not much else.

Steady grind on a trail that is shaded in its entirety. Latter half of the trail is narrower and has more rocks and roots to negotiate. At the top, go straight ahead at the trifurcation if you wish to get to the restaurant(which incidentally, has long been shuttered i.e., don't expect to get a meal, a drink or even fresh water at the top). Views from the top are nice (though the day we chose was characterized by a bit too much haze). A little disconcerting to see people drive up to the spot it's taken you 2 1/2 hours of toil to reach. Overall nice, if unspectacular hike.
