Gifford Woods State Park

Gifford Woods State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Gifford Woods is a perfectly situated spot from which to launch your adventures into the Green Mountains and the Killington area. Whether you’re here for late-season skiing or mountain biking at Killington or hiking in the Green Mountains (especially portions of the Appalachian Trail or Vermont’s Long Trail), this is a great, centrally located base camp.

The Appalachian Trail passes right through the park, and it forms the right-hand border for site 12 within the campground. I happened to stay there one night and found it fascinating to be perched right on that fabled footpath. Turn left from this site and head for the summit of Katahdin; turn right for Amicalola Falls, Georgia."

This must be the worst place to camp on earth. It is a garbage strewn mud pit inhabited by drunken louts and their out of control offspring. We arrived late in the afternoon and felt fortunate to find a site, but it didn't take long to find out why. With all the yelling, loud music and fist fights going on all around us we didn't stay long enough to make camp. Take it from us, Grout pond may have been a nice place in the past, but now it seems like it has been taken over by homeless drug addicts.
