Northeast Kingdom

Northeast Kingdom Professional Review and Guide

"Like many areas of Vermont, the Northeast Kingdom has its own distinct flavor. Rich in evergreens, it is not the most colorful area of Vermont as far as fall foliage is concerned. You will not see the wall-to-wall blazing oranges, yellows and reds that can so easily be found elsewhere in the state. However, the deep greens of the conifers, mixed with the less frequent maples and birches, provide us with a landscape that has a lot of punch. In fact, a single maple in peak foliage becomes an event among a sea of green. Perhaps fall colors are best appreciated in precisely this setting.

The terrain here is also worthy of note and, to the more perceptive, unique to this area. Among the dense evergreen forests are wide expanses of open, gentle hills and plateaus, such as the ones near Barr Hill in Greensboro, in the Craftsbury Common area and in towns like Irasburg. One can imagine that a century ago there was even more open space here used for pastures and that many of the forested areas we see today are, in fact, quite young."
