Mount Horrid and the Great Cliff Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The climb to Mount Horrid’s Great Cliff is popular for the spectacular views it provides in such a short and achievable distance. From the cliffs you can overlook the surrounding mountains and the marsh and pond below (which you can also observe from the road—it is a good wildlife watching spot). You will not find south-facing cliff habitat like this in much of New England, which also makes this hike fairly unusual. This cliff provides nesting habitat for peregrine falcons and may be closed from March 15 to August 1 to protect their nests.

Please observe these closures as peregrine falcons are still making a comeback after being nearly wiped out in this region in the 1950s. During times of closure, if just the short spur trail to the cliff is closed, you may still be able to hike north on the Long Trail to the summit of Mount Horrid. Although views are limited as the summit is fairly treed-in, the accomplishment of climbing a mountain is bound to make kids proud."
