Grout Pond Recreation Area

Grout Pond Recreation Area Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is no sanitized, drive-in, drive-out campground. The campsites at Grout Pond are spread out along a hiking trail that winds around the western shore of the pond. You have to hike your gear in to your tent site. This extra effort will give you a huge payoff, though.

You hike in to any of the 11 tent and lean-to sites via the Pond Loop Trail. This trail cuts through a dense forest, through which you can catch tantalizing glimpses of the pond as you start out. As its name implies, the Pond Loop Trail brings you all the way around Grout Pond. The campsites are spread liberally along the first mile of the trail. No camping is permitted beyond site 11, the last developed tent site. Since you hike in to the sites, parking is in the small lot past the campground host cabin."

This tent camping trip was enjoyable. We had a lake front site that was a bit separate from the others. My first impression was that the sites were too close to the road and did not provide the seclusion that we wanted. It was after the Labor Day crowds so we had more privacy then we expected. Good hiking opportunities were available from an easy walk around the lake to extended day trips from our camp site. We enjoyed a day hike to Glen Lake that offered many points of interest along the way. After a long day of hiking the hot showers and soda machines provided a luxury that we gladly enjoyed. Some of the most memorable times were at night with the wild sounds of the Barred Owls hooting around the lake. The wild sounds came from the woods not the people as it should. - Rick Morris Plains, NJ
