Cave Springs Recreation Area

Cave Springs Recreation Area Professional Review and Guide

"Far out in the southwest corner of Virginia is an area known for coal production but largely overlooked by the rest of the state. Its topography of horizontal Appalachian Plateau sandstone identifies it less with Virginia and more with neighboring Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Local residents are known for their tenacity in carving out lives from largely inhospitable landscapes.

Early timber and mining efforts stripped many of these mountains, and the Forest Service bought land for the Clinch Ranger District to protect the headwaters of the Tennessee River. Visit this little-known region, and you’ll be amazed by the natural beauty that lies in this obscure corner of the Old Dominion."

While the campground does not rate high in the privacy category, the other factors associated with a good camping experience outweigh this one negative factor. The hiking is excellent, being unmatched anywhere in the southeast. Add the super hiking to the fishing, mountain biking and bouldering opportunites and you have a camping destination that is superb. Two notes of caution: (1) It rains frequently, so bring a tarp, rope and poles to create a rain cover for the picnic table at your campsite; (2) Even in the summertime, the weather can get downright chilly at the elevations encountered in the park and the surrounding Mt. Rogers high country, so bring adequate clothing.
