Wintergreen Mountain Resort Trails-Milepost 13.7 Professional Review and Guide

"This environmentally sensitive resort near the Parkway takes preservation and good hospitality seriously. Environmentalists weren’t happy when private land beside the Parkway across Black Rock Mountain was purchased in the 1970s and became Wintergreen Mountain Resort. The Appalachian Trail was rerouted as a result (but it’s still hiked today as a Wintergreen trail).

Not that it will satisfy the most ardent environmentalist, but Wintergreen’s lodge and condominium accommodations and its status as a ski, golf, and tennis resort may actually be exceeded by its renowned preservation program and 30-mile trail system, a then refreshing approach I featured in a 1980s issue of American Forests magazine."

My wife and I hit the trail with energy and enthusiasm. We spotted a pack of wild coyotes and had to make a significant detour. We found that several of the sections were much longer in fact than estimated on the map and by trail markers. One particularly deceiving marker read "0.3 miles" which should have taken us approx. 10 minutes, but took nearly 30 minutes - way over 0.3 miles! Great scenery. Very challenging.
