Waynesboro Ramble

Waynesboro Ramble Professional Review and Guide

"The Waynesboro Ramble takes the cyclist through the far eastern reaches of the spectacular Shenandoah Valley. Starting in Waynesboro, whose motto is “Hospitality in the Valley,” the route takes a long, gradual climb out of the city on its way to the base of Calf Mountain and the Blue Ridge. Circling around smaller Ramsey Mountain, the ramble rewards the cyclist with a beautiful and gradual run down to the South River.

Circling through several small Augusta County villages, the ramble brings the cyclist back through the quaint and easily manageable downtown shopping district, where the city’s hospitality can be experienced. Terrain: Gently rolling. One short, steep climb in the city, then one long, gradual climb to Calf Mountain, will challenge beginners."

This trail must have been devised quite a few years ago. No one would call this a decent route in its current state of development, so I advise not doing this if you have any alternative - like the Middlebrook Ramble, which is far superior. This ramble basically circumnavigates Waynesboro, an undistinguished suburb of Charlottesville. There are perhaps two stretches of some beauty, though even these are marred by McMansions, parked Harleys, boats on trailers, rusted car hulks, high tension lines or some other reminder of how bad development can be. Other stretches feature in addition to the above congestion, fairly heavy traffic, industrial areas, shoulderless pathways (usually in conjunction with traversing interstate on-ramps) and other delights. Should be removed from the list, frankly.
Great ride. Beautiful hilly farmland, very low traffic. Just enough of a challenge for this South Florida girl. Good directions.
