Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel: Water, Sun, and Sky Professional Review and Guide
"The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is a 23-mile, open-water drive across the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. This highway complex traverses trestles, causeways, bridges, manmade islands, and tunnels to connect the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula with the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area. The drive offers superb views of Chesapeake Bay and the open Atlantic Ocean. It includes a stop 3 miles out at sea, where Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, at a restaurant and 625-foot fishing pier on one of the manmade islands. You can walk out on the pier for a more leisurely view of the water, or look for passing ships while enjoying a bite at the Sea Gull Pier Restaurant. The at-sea location also makes this the best place in Virginia to watch sea birds.
Special attractions: The views from the bridges and trestles of the open Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay, as you are suspended between sky and water, provide a unique experience. The drive over the water is broken up by two tunnels. A stop at the restaurant and fishing pier 4 miles out at sea on one of the manmade islands gives you the opportunity to walk out over the water to look at birds, ocean-going vessels, and views of the distant shore. Birders consider the manmade islands the best place in Virginia to observe sea birds."
