Beaches and Dikes, Virginia Beach Professional Review and Guide
"After walking through the marshes on the Back Bay walk, you may explore the beaches, dunes, shrub lands, and marshes that lie between the bay and the ocean. The refuge staff manages a series of impoundments in which the water level can be raised or lowered. Manipulating water levels, controlled burning, and plowing are some of the techniques used to encourage the growth of succulent marsh plants that provide food for waterfowl.
Special attractions: Beach walk; wildlife habitat for threatened species such as sea turtles, peregrine falcons, and bald eagles, as well as migrating waterfowl such as snow geese and tundra swans."
