"Turkey Run Park is a section of land within the George Washington Memorial Parkway, near Interstate 495. The 7174-square-acre parkway stretches from Great Falls to Mount Vernon. The park offers two loop trails that travel up and down the bluff and three large picnic areas that overlook the Potomac River. The Potomac Heritage Trail (PHT) runs through the park and makes up part of each loop. The PHT is a network of trails, not all connected yet, that runs on both sides of the Potomac from Point Lookout in Maryland and the Northern Neck of Virginia to Seward, Pennsylvania. The shorter of the two loop hikes, the 1-mile Turkey Run Trail descends steep switchbacks and stairs to the river to return back up the bluff adjacent to Turkey Run. The trail traverses through mature forest and crosses Turkey Run twice. The run cuts a deep ravine through the bluffs, just like a lot of the streams along the Potomac in Virginia, providing an intimate experience in the forest." Read more

"Turkey Run Park consists of 700 pristine acres of mature, second-growth upland forest. This rich environment once nurtured Indian tribes living on the banks of the Potomac River. During the Civil War, Union troops occupied the area to protect the Federal City. This verdant deciduous forest is an ideal habitat for reptiles, bats, beavers, foxes, and white-tailed deer. The park offers picnic areas, limited recreational facilities, and ample parking. Through the woods, you will catch glimpses of the Potomac River and realize you’re quite high above it, around 350 feet from the shoreline. Despite the feeling of isolation in this wild natural environment, there’s still plenty of road noise from the various highways that pass near this park." Read more
