Little Wilson Creek Wilderness

Little Wilson Creek Wilderness Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Most hikers enter Little Wilson Creek Wilderness on trails out of Grayson Highlands State Park. Scales, an area named for the livestock scales once located here, makes a great alternate starting point. You not only avoid crowds but get a high-country fix that much faster. Scales sits smack-dab in the midst of Mount Rogers’ crest zone, flanked by Stone Mountain and Wilburn Ridge.

Huckleberry bushes bloom profusely (there are reports of folks carrying three gallons or more out of thickets along Scales Trail). On Stone Mountain, wild horses graze. As you approach them, young foals bolt from cover of tall grass and dart behind their mothers. In the words of a passerby, “It’s as wild as it gets up here.”"

We attempted this hike using the alternate starting point of Grayson Highlands State Park and the Big Wilson Creek Trail. From the campground, we followed the combined Upchurch Road/Wilburn Branch trails along the Wilson Creek but were unable to locate the intersection with the Big Wilson Creek Trail. After wasting valuable time looking, we decided to ford the creek and see if we could locate it on the opposite side. We quickly located a sign indicating the beginning of the trail but then had trouble following the un-blazed, un-maintained trail uphill. After losing the trail, we bushwhacked our way uphill until we located an old road bed. With tired legs and rain beginning to fall, we decided to call it a day and took the road back toward Grayson Highlands. These troubles were in contrast to our experience the day before where all the trails out of Grayson Highlands were well maintained and marked. I would recommend avoiding the Big Wilson Creek Trail and sticking to the primary route suggested. Although we didn’t complete the route, we still enjoyed a nice morning of hiking and the beautiful scenery. Additional Note - Our stay at Grayson Highlands State Park was very enjoyable. The sites are well maintained, the bathroom/shower facilities were excellent and the staff very helpful.
