Great Dismal Swamp

Great Dismal Swamp Professional Review and Guide

"This ride's general location is 6 miles south of Suffolk. Scenery includes a densely wooded wildlife refuge surrounding Lake Drummond. This is a good beginner ride, but bring bug spray.

The Washington Ditch Road is the designated bike trail at the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and runs from the western edge of the refuge to Lake Drummond at the center. This hard-packed, sandy double-track parallels one of numerous canals George Washington had dug to drain the swampland and to connect the Chesapeake Bay and Albemarle Sound via a north-south canal. There are also more than 140 miles of logging and service roads that crisscross the 107,000 acre dense swamp."

I hiked the trail. It is a pretty boring hike, but would be a nice bike ride. The trail is plenty of insects, but if you were riding they would not be as much of a factor. It is very straight and follows along the Washington Ditch. Really green and lots of wildlife.
