Fairy Stone State Park Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Legend has it that a long time ago, fairies inhabited the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in this section of Virginia near the North Carolina border. One day their play was interrupted by an elfin messenger who’d come from a distant city to bring news about the death of Christ. The fairies’ grief was tremendous, and as their tears touched the earth, they formed beautiful crosses that symbolized the crucifixion.
Although the fairies disappeared, these stone crosses remained and can still be found here today. Wearers of these fairy crosses long believed that they warded off witchcraft, sickness, accidents, and disaster. You may not put much stock in the myth, but there is no place in the world that offers either the quantity or the quality of shape of the brown staurolite crosses you find at Fairy Stone State Park."
