North River Gorge Trail

North River Gorge Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This ride's general location is 25 miles Northwest of Staunton and about the same distance southwest of Harrisonburg. Scenery includes dense woods and rock outcroppings in the gorge formed by this beautiful mountain stream. This easy out-and-back is a good beginners trail. The trail expands and contracts between single- and double-track as it roughly follows North River through the woods in this small valley, which lies between Lookout and Trimble Mts.

Although this is a fairly easy ride, several rocky sections in addition to the dozen river crossings might offer a good technical challenge even for advanced riders. This is also a great spot for seeing wildlife, maybe even a black bear."

A really fun ride!! While it may not challenge you aerobically, it will however give you quite a challenge with the numerous river crossings. We were able to ride across most of the river crossings, but some of them were quite deep so cross carefully. You will cross the river over 20 times if you make it an "out and back" ride so be sure to bring some dry socks for the drive home!
