Fountainhead Regional Park

Fountainhead Regional Park Professional Review and Guide

"This ride will take you through one of the region’s most successful off-road cycling projects. Originally conceived by a band of riders from MORE in early 1994, and redesigned with the International Mountain Biking Organization (IMBA) in 2010–2012, the new Fountainhead Trail is challenging, fun, and an incredibly rewarding system of trails.

The once straight and steep climbs and downhills that crossed the park have been replaced with challenging switchbacks and screaming berms. Fountainhead is a glorious playground in which to take your mountain-biking skills to the next level."

More trail than the guide states. Now close to 8 miles broken into 6 loops. Rooty singletrack will challenge you to pick a smooth line. Lots of twists and turns with short climbs and quick descents. Trail map posted on large board at trailhead and also available at the park office.

Since DC does not have a lot to offer for mountain bikers I would rate this trail as the best in the area. The day I rode it was over 90 degrees and humid. The temperature made for an exhausting but enjoyable ride. None of the climbs are very long nor overly steep. Overall it is a lot of fun with varied terrain including some logs, plenty of roots and a few rocky sections, though nothing overly technical.

Fountain Head is probably the best in the DC metro area. I have done MB races and adventure races here. I have never seen it crowded to the point were it becomes a problem. It you like real mountain bike riding, its a great place to ride.

Excellent trail with different level of difficulties. Thanks MORE for the work on the trail.

Great trail, one of my favorites in the area. MORE does a great job of maintaining it. Short fast climbs and short fun downhills. Classic cross-country trail.
