The sunrise is always worth it. Get on the mountain before the herds of people come in at 8am!

This should really be on every hiker's bucket list. Old Rag is a satisfying accomplishment that not only offers great views from the top but also has an extended section of rock scrambling that gives both a mental and a physical challenge. I ascended via the Weakley Hollow Fire Road and the Saddle Trail and found it to be a good workout but not exhausting. The summit itself is great to explore; allow lots of time there. Ensure that you have enough time to complete the rock scramble--it will take longer than you expect.

One of the most popular hikes in Shenandoah National Park, Old Rag lives up to expectation, even when the trail is crowded. The rock scramble is my favorite part of this hike, and the views from the top of Old Rag are spectacular. I did this hike mid-week in late June and it wasn't particularly crowded, although I'm sure it's much more packed on weekends. There are some tight squeezes in between rocks so big, bulky backpacks probably aren't a good idea on this trail.

This is definitely the most popular trail In Shenandoah National Park, so it is a good idea to arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the congestion at rock scrambling sections. I like this trail for the adventure it provides and the great views. The first part of the trail is a steady incline, moderately difficult. Then it’s up and down, around and scrambling over rocks to the summit. The descent is an easier, nice walk through the woods.
