Emporia "Great Peanut" Challenge

Emporia "Great Peanut" Challenge Professional Review and Guide

"This ride celebrates the humble peanut and the southern Virginia farm country that grows the peanut with such pride. There are twelve bike rides ranging in length from 13 to 125 miles. The rides ramble past vast farm acreage planted not only in peanuts, but also cotton and corn.

The Virginia metric century passes by farm after farm, wanders through the town of Emporia, and does a brief tour through the Low Ground swamp area, which separates tidewater Virginia from the Piedmont. The 13-mile tour is for those looking for a quick ride. Terrain: flat with a few rolling hills."

A pleasant ride through the peanut and wheat fields of south central Virginia. No spectacular views, but nice agricultural scenery, few cars, and flat with a few rollers. It's very open, so if it's a hot sunny day, bring lots of water and sunscreen. If you get tired, you can bail at about 35.9 by going right on Zion Church Rd (VA 629) for a 5-mile cutoff back to the start. Two updates: (1) the starting point, Cattail Creek RV Park, is now closed. Consider parking at the motel or truck stop just off the interstate instead. (2) The right turn at 35.2 miles has been re-signed as Lifsey Rd. It turns right again at 35.7 miles as indicated in the cue sheet. Have fun!
