White Rock Falls

White Rock Falls Professional Review and Guide

"The Youth Conservation Corps built White Rock Falls Trail in 1979. Members of the Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club—who volunteer their time to do upkeep and repair on 10-plus miles of the Appalachian Trail, from Reeds Gap to Tye River—maintain the trail. The club adopted the White Rock Falls Trail even though it isn’t part of the Appalachian Trail."

Nice trail except the smell of dog crap here and there. Above the falls stairs are pretty steep but remainder of trail is fairly easy.

My Boy Scout troop has camped here every year for many years. It is always an exceptionally rewarding hike and campout. You can even backpack the back or more remote areas. Be sure to always check with the helpful rangers we ran into water problems once and were rained out once (5 inches in one night).

I went here with my 2 kids (5 & 7) for their first hike. They LOVED it there were so many rocks to scramble over & the view of the water fall was a great reward.

My husband and I, along with a friend and her son, hiked the High Shoals Loop Trail. It was an exceptionally nice day for early February, so I was surprised that there were not more people on the trail. It's a nice area and the trail is well marked. It's rated as moderately strenuous, except for about 1/4 mile just before and above the falls, which is rated extremely strenuous. I felt that the only thing that really made it strenuous was the many steps you have to climb to reach the falls. It is worth the trip as High Shoals Falls are very pretty. There are also a number of smaller cascades along the trail before reaching the main falls. I look forward to going back in the spring when the trees and flowers are in bloom.
