Hiking Shenandoah National Park
by Bert & Jane Gildart (Falcon Guides)
A short stroll on a historic road passes the site of an Episcopal mission. The old road descends gently and is marked by yellow blazes and soon parallels a small creek on the right. This stroll follows an old road once used by the mountain people from the east and west valleys to access an Episcopal mission. Later, valley folks used the road for park access. Little remains of this once active area other than an old stone wall.Today, the Park Service maintains the road as a fire road.Apple trees dot the area, providing mute testimony of a once flourishing agricultural community. A multitude of trees and bushes grace the old road.
