Devils Racecourse Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Devils Racecourse, the destination of this hike, is an ancient streambed with only the boulders remaining. While day hiking along the Blue Ridge in northern Virginia, you will find excellent views of the Shenandoah Valley from Crescent Rock, 0.5 mile before reaching Devils Racecourse. Although this hike begins in Virginia, about half of this section of the A.T. is located in Jefferson County, West Virginia.
Walk north on the A.T. from the parking lot and climb into a forest of laurel, pine, and chestnut oak. Reach a rock outcrop at mile 0.6, where you will find good views of the valley, and then descend through rocks (sometimes steeply and on switchbacks) 0.25 mile to a stream crossing at Pigeon Hollow. Climb steeply and continue when you reach the junction with an old path. At mile 1.1, hike through a forest of old pines mixed with oaks."
