North Anna Battlefield Park

North Anna Battlefield Park Professional Review and Guide

"North of Motts Run Reservoir, trails lace the hillside, looking out across the lake. Undulating terrain and towering forest belie the tightknit nature of the trail system, which can be customized to different lengths.

The Battle of Ox Ford unfolds as you hike through this Hanover County park. Interpretive signs describe the events of the battle in chronological order, highlighting the personalities, tactical strategies, and logistical constraints that shaped the conflagration."

Took our 5, 4, 3, and 6 month old (in a baby carrier) around Beaver Lake. Weather was beautiful and the traffic (both parking and on the trail) was light. The sign says the Beaver Lake trail is about 5 miles, but I think it is closer to 3. We did the whole loop in about 2 hours. Hills and slopes are gentle and the gravel/dirt path is fairly clear and even. I would definitely recommend this walk to other families or persons looking for a leisurely walk.

We hiked the trails around the pond which were well maintained and well marked with signage. Much of this park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's and there is a museum dedicated to the CCC in this park. The trail we walked had bridges over the swampy areas, and docks leading out to the pond, a view of the dam and a little chair carved out of a tree stump. There are two ponds in the park covered with water lilies. We rented a canoe and took a peaceful trip spotting many turtles sunning on logs and trees stretched across the waterway. Definitely pick up a trail map at the visitor's station as there are many cris-crossing trails to choose from. There is a very large pool with slides and water features that was a big hit with my son. This park is a great place to camp, hike, canoe, swim and picnic.

Overall good place to hike. This site refers to the immediate trail around the lake but there are tons of trails and fire roads throughout the park. Be aware of hunters during hunting season!

Pocahontas is a very pretty and pleasant place to hike in. On the particular weekend that we attend, it was abit crowded. The hike around the lake is a perfect mix of flat areas, with a few ascents thrown in for good measure. Just what one needs to start to get their "rythm" back after a summer of being stuck in-side for fear of mealting if you were to venture out. I highly recommend this hike for anybody of all shapes and sizes.

This trail was a really nice, leisurely hike. We started off from our campsite and hiked about a mile to the start of the lake loop. The lake is pretty and it starts off with a dam/waterfall view that is great. The trail itself goes around the lake and wasn't very crowded at all; I was expecting a crowd because of the beautiful weather. There are also observation docks that go out onto the water. That was fun. The total hike (from campground, around lake, and back to campground) was about five miles. The next day, my calves were a little sore, so great exercise, but not overly taxing. It was a fun, short hike.
