Virginia Highlands Traverse

Virginia Highlands Traverse Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Mountain peaks and high meadows are the highlights of this traverse on the “rooftop of Virginia.” By taking a side 1-mile round-trip to the fir- and spruce-covered summit of Mount Rogers, you will be able to take in Virginia’s three highest points on this trip (Rogers, Whitetop, and Pine Mountains).

Mount Rogers was known as Balsam Mountain until 1883, when it was named for William Barton Rogers (1804–1882). Rogers was Virginia’s first state geologist. Mount Rogers’s summit is covered with red spruce and the northernmost stand of Fraser fir."
