Straight Mountain and the Virginia Creeper Trail

Straight Mountain and the Virginia Creeper Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"At 9.4 miles, this is one of the longer day hikes in this book, yet the walking is relatively easy, and the ascents are gradual with just a few short, steep climbs. The rewards are a number of views from Straight Mountain and a walk of several miles beside Whitetop Laurel Creek on the Virginia Creeper Trail. Many consider it the best and most scenic rail-trail in the state.

Descend from US 58 on the purple-blazed Beartree Gap Trail, and turn right onto the A.T. at 0.5 mile. One of the day’s best vistas comes into view at 1.4 miles. To the east are Whitetop Mountain and Mount Rogers. Continuing along the ridgeline, there are several views of Beartree Lake and the crest of Iron Mountain to the northwest. The Trail dips for a bit before resuming the ascent to pass a side trail to Saunders Shelter at 2.8 miles. Come to the crest of Straight Mountain less than 600 feet later. Receding to the southeast, and getting progressively higher, you will see a succession of ridgelines—Laurel, Chestnut, Beech, and Whitetop Mountains."
