Smart View Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This is a moderate hike with ample rewards. Situated on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Smart View Picnic Area features a loop that starts at a historic cabin, then visits a creek. After that, you wander through woods and fields, culminating in a far-reaching view of the Piedmont before returning to the trailhead.
This is the type of hike on which you take your willing but out-of-shape and woods-wary cousin. It isn’t too difficult, with elevation changes of just over a couple of hundred feet. It offers human history at the Trail Cabin. And hikers can enjoy a “Smart View” of the Piedmont in the distance along the way. Furthermore, the well-marked and -maintained trail network starts at a picnic area with a shelter, water, and restrooms, so your citified cousin won’t feel too disconnected from civilization. Hikers can cut the loop short if need be, in case your cousin decides there are just too many icky spiders in the woods. And a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway will warm your cousin up to the idea of reconnecting with the nature of Western Virginia."
