Roanoke Area Trails-Mileposts 110.6-120.4 Professional Review and Guide

"There are two truly urban areas presented by the Parkway—Roanoke, Virginia, and Asheville, North Carolina. Purists may be tempted to see them as interruptions in the natural experience of the Parkway, but these are worthwhile Appalachian cities. Heading south, Roanoke is the first and larger of the two.

Unlike the more southerly Asheville, where the Parkway plummets 3,000 feet down to pass the city then gains it all back on the climb beyond, Roanoke embraces the Parkway’s glide through town, albeit with increasing suburban development. And in a situation very unlike Asheville, where Parkway facilities are located at high elevation well outside the city, until recently Roanoke had a bonafide Parkway campground where you could camp very close to town. Alas, Roanoke Mountain Campground and the city itself are low enough in elevation that neither basks in the cool climate of higher parts of
the Parkway. The former Roanoke Mountain Campground has been turned into a picnic area."
