Mathews Arm Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Mathews Arm is the northernmost campground in Shenandoah National Park. While it has flushing toilets, it is the only Skyline Drive campground without showers or a camp store. But don’t let this discourage you from camping here. Fall-color October weekends and high-summer weekends are the busiest times in Shenandoah National Park. Sites can be difficult to come by, even though there are four campgrounds and 647 sites. Mathews Arm is often the last one to fill, but it is only 2 miles from Elkwallow Wayside’s camping supplies and food service.

Campers can use the coin-operated showers at any of the other campgrounds. These same campgrounds are almost empty during the week at the same times of year, but Mathews Arm, with its private, spacious walk-in tent sites, is deserving of consideration even when the other campgrounds are vacant. Despite the campground’s elevation, cell phone coverage can be spotty."

Quiet and peaceful, could barely hear the cars on the road. Stay on the back side of loop B. I had deer walking up to my campsite B8. I fed one of them marshmallows and she walked up to within 5 feet of where I was standing, Very cool. Use the toilet that is farthest from the entrance of loop B, it has lights.

Good place for camping with kids. The sites all had nice, flat tent sites, camp grill and tables. We were part of a larger 4 family group and both the kids and adults had a great time. The kids could run between campsites without venturing too far and were always within sight. Very quiet at night, despite being full. The short hike over to Abbott's Lake and lodge are fun for young kids. We'd definitely camp here again.
